Google Glass with prescription lenses spotted in NY

2 hrs.

A new variant of the Google Glass augmented-reality headset has been spotted in New York ? one with prescription lenses, which should be welcome news to nearsighted gadget-lovers?around the world.

The device (in Google muted red) was photographed?at a restaurant in New York?by an anonymous tipster, who then sent the picture?in to the blog Road to Virtual Reality. The now-familiar shape of the Glass prototype, with battery pack behind the ear and visor arm in front, adorns a pair of ordinary metal-framed prescription?glasses.

It may come as no surprise that Google,?a company with so many four-eyed nerds (like us!), should make their tech compatible with them, but it's not always possible. Some methods of presenting 3-D or augmented reality simply don't work when paired with glasses, whether for optical or ergonomic reasons. That means that millions don't get the opportunity to see movies in 3-D or try out the latest display technologies.

But luckily for the glasses-wearing public, Google's highly?anticipated headset appears to work well enough to take on the road, although there may still be limitations relating to other visual conditions, like astigmatism.

Google Glass isn't yet available for the public, but a $1,500 "Explorer Edition" developer kit is set to ship early in 2013, at which point it should be slightly more common to see the devices in the wild.

New Year's Resolutions You Should Skip - Devour Recipe & Food ...

    Dec 30

Why does putting up a fresh cat calendar always inspire us to promise ourselves wild things we can never live up to? Fact is, you?re pretty bitchin? already, so feel free to keep these resolutions out of your 2013 plans.

    Lose Weight
Trimming up is great, but setting unrealistic goals like dropping a third of your body weight by summer is just going to get you down. Which in turn will cause you to assume the fetal position while binging on ice cream. Instead, just focus on staying active and healthy.

    Take The Stairs
Admirable, but totally undoable. You?ll be in a rush one day, or stuck behind too many slow walkers, or wanting to get in some elevator chat time with that cute guy/girl from the third floor office. Either way, you?ll befriend the elevator again.

    Less Time on The Internet
I?m pretty sure Facebook and YouTube will be equally entertaining in 2013. Sure, 10 hours a day online is ruining your real life, but think of your Twitter followers!

    Eat Healthy Food
You should totally attempt to eat some more healthy, home cooked meals. But face it: pizza night isn?t going to take a hike any time soon. It?s all about balance.

    Save Money
Starting a loose change piggy bank is a great way to save money ? until you get a midnight craving for chow mein (note: It is perfectly acceptable to pay a $20 delivery bill with quarters and dimes!)? A better way to save money is to save up for something you want. Like shoes.

    Drink Less
If 2013 turns out to be a bust, you?re not going to drink less. And if 2013 has tons of cause for celebration, you?re not going to drink less. Accept it and move on.

Here?s to 2013! A year to be our best without being so hard on ourselves! Tsaketa!

CALIFORNIA FOCUS - "NEXT ELECTION: WILL GOP FIND ANOTHER BILLIONAIRE?"

CALIFORNIA FOCUS - "NEXT ELECTION: WILL GOP FIND ANOTHER BILLIONAIRE?"

The moment one election ends, all politicians' thoughts naturally turn to the next one. And California's 2014 run for governor "which has already informally begun" could be one completely unique.

There's the good chance current Gov. Jerry Brown will try for a second term in his second coming " a fourth overall, which would tie him with Earl Warren for the most often-elected governor in this state's history.

If the 74-year-old Brown opts to slip quietly into retirement " not the sort of thing that's in his nature " Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom stands panting in the wings, ready to jump in. No doubt, Brown will tantalize Newsom, the two-term San Francisco mayor and son of a close associate of Brown's father, as long as he can, keeping him dangling in the wind as a sort of payback for an abortive 2010 primary election run in which Newsom sometimes suggested Brown was a has-been.

Of course, if Brown leaves, there could be plenty of Democratic primary competition for Newsom, starting with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Attorney General Kamala Harris and perhaps including state Controller John Chiang, who has developed a reputation as a rare sort of political straight-shooter and a responsible fiscal steward not afraid of challenging even his own party mates in the Legislature.

But the chances are Brown will run again, leaving some of the others to play musical chairs among

    lesser statewide offices.

In several election-season talks, Brown alluded to California's future, calling it "dynamic" and saying his moves during the last two years have created a solid "framework for a very good credit rating." Brown's clear implication was that he'll want to be around to enjoy the fruits of his very hard work in paring budgets and passing Proposition 30's temporary tax increases.

One person who certainly would not be scared off by a Brown reelection drive is Molly Munger, who refused to knuckle under this year when Brown tried to get her to give up or compromise on her school tax plan, which turned into Proposition 38 last fall. Billionaire Munger put about $20 million into the losing campaign for that one; imagine what she might spend on her own candidacy.

"For sure, she has the ego for a race like that," says one acquaintance. But the more interesting party in this nascent gubernatorial season may be the Republicans, who have no incumbents in statewide office and trail Democrats 44-29 percent in voter registration, with most other voters signed up with no party preference, today's parlance for independent.

Every since then-Attorney General Dan Lungren lost badly to Democrat Gray Davis in 1998, the GOP's gubernatorial runs have been dominated by billionaires and near-billionaires. Its last three candidates for the state's top job fell into that category: financier Bill Simon, muscleman actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and businesswoman Meg Whitman, now the CEO of the seemingly ever-downsizing Hewlett-Packard Co.

Whitman put about $150 million of her own funds into her 2010 run against Brown and lost handily.

But friends of 2002 loser Simon say he's contemplating another run in spite of the evidence that in order to win, a billionaire needs a measure of celebrity to go along with all that cash. Schwarzenegger had both a big name and big money, while Whitman and her primary opponent, former state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, a near billionaire, for the most part had only big piles of cash.

Poizner now says he might run again. The former state insurance commissioner founded and then sold a company that invented and designed the GPS chip for cellphones. He's spent most of the last two years setting up _www.empowered.com_ (http://www.empowered.com/) , an adult-oriented job-training and counseling business where he partners with UCLA, among others.

"I haven't decided to run or not to run," Poizner says. Like other super-wealthy possibilities, he doesn't have to decide soon, because fund-raising is no problem for him. He can write a check for whatever amount might be needed.

Other Republicans thinking of running include Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, best known for getting arrested while trying to carry a gun onto an airplane, and John Cox, a real estate investor and former chairman of the Cook County (Chicago) Republican committee who now lives in Rancho Santa Fe, near San Diego.

So there will be no dearth of candidates. The wild card here may be the new Top Two primary system, which got its first outing this year and saw more than 20 contests where the runoff election matched candidates from the same party. Could the next contest pit Brown against Molly Munger in an intraparty grudge match? Brown isn't saying, but may still resent Munger's commercials disparaging Proposition 30, while Munger resents Brown for killing off her rival plan.

That might be as bitter an election fight as California has seen, and it could happen.

Microsoft Warns of Zero Day Bug Affecting Internet Explorer 6-8

Microsoft is currently investigating reports of a zero day bug affecting Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8, the company announced in a Security Advisory. At issue is a remote code execution vulnerability that would allow attackers to seize control of a Windows PC.

How it works is IE attempts to reference and use an object that had previously been freed. The components of an exploit for such a vulnerability are typically:

    • Javascript to trigger the Internet Explorer vulnerability
    • Heap spray or similar memory preparation to ensure the memory being accessed after it has been freed is useful
    • A way around the ASLR platform-level mitigation
    • A way around the DEP platform-level mitigation

    Chrome
Microsoft suggests disabling certain services while it works on a patch. Alternately, you can use an alternative browser like Google Chrome (shown above).

"The IE team is working around the clock to develop a security update to address this vulnerability for earlier versions of the product," Microsoft stated. " However, until the update is available, customers using Internet Explorer 8 can block the current targeted attacks by introducing changes to disrupt any of the elements of the exploit."

Those changes include disabling Javascript, disabling Flash, and disabling the MS-Help protocol handler along with ensuring "Java6" is not allowed to run.

The vulnerability is not present in IE9 or IE10.

US cancer screening rates decline over the last 10 years, finds new study

Dec. 27, 2012 ? The rate of people who seek preventive cancer screenings has fallen over the last ten years in the United States with wide variations between white-collar and blue-collar workers, according to a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine study published on December 27 in the open-access journal Frontiers in Cancer Epidemiology.

While earlier diagnoses and improved treatments have increased the number of survivors, cancer remains one of the most prominent chronic diseases and, last year alone, claimed the lives of more than 570,000 people in the U.S.

"There is a great need for increased cancer prevention efforts in the U.S., especially for screening as it is considered one of the most important preventive behaviors and helps decrease the burden of this disease on society in terms of quality of life, the number of lives lost and insurance costs," said lead author Tainya Clarke, M.P.H., research associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health.

"But despite this," Clarke continued, "our research has shown that adherence rates for cancer screenings have generally declined with severe implications for the health outlook of our society."

For their NIH-funded study, Clarke and her team evaluated the cancer screening behaviors of the general public and cancer survivors to see if government-recommended screenings goals were achieved.

The study looked at cancer screening adherence rates for colorectal, breast, cervical and prostate cancers and compared the screening rates among the general public to all cancer survivors and to the subpopulation of employed survivors.

Results showed that the general public did not meet government recommendations for cancer screenings for any cancer types except colorectal cancer. About 54 percent of the general public underwent colorectal screenings, exceeding the 50 percent goal of the government's "Healthy People 2010" national health promotion and disease prevention initiative.

By contrast, cancer survivors, who are at an increased risk of developing the disease, had higher screening rates and underwent the recommended cancer screenings for all types except cervical cancer, which decreased to 78 percent over the last decade. The study also showed a decline among cancers survivors who sought cancer screenings over the last three years.

The researchers used the recommended cancer screening rates set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and looked at data from the National Health Interview Survey between 1997 and 2010. In total, 174,393 people were included in the study analysis, with 7,528 employed cancer survivors and 119,374 people representing the general population.

In addition, the study showed that among survivors, white collar workers had higher screening rates than blue collar workers -- a crucial discovery that Clarke hopes will help change current job-related policies and overcome disparities within different professions of working cancer survivors.

The researchers speculated that ongoing disagreements among the United States Preventive Services Task Force, American Cancer Society and others over screening guidelines, as well as the decrease in worker insurance rates over the decade may have influenced the decline in screening rates.

Clarke hopes that more comprehensive research will assess the combined factors affecting screening rates and lead to more effective workplace interventions and increase screening within each occupational sector.

Egypt's prosecutor orders probe against opposition

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian official says the country's top prosecutor has ordered an investigation into accusations against opposition leaders of incitement to overthrow the regime.

The prosecution official said Thursday a judge will investigate the report filed last month accusing Mohammed ElBaradei, Nobel Prize laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, along with Amr Moussa, former foreign minister and Hamdeen Sabahi, a former presidential candidate, of inciting the overthrow of Egypt's first elected president, Mohammed Morsi.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policies.

The accusations were filed by a lawyer during a political crisis over a series of presidential decrees that granted Morsi and the committee drafting the disputed constitution immunity from judicial oversight. Tensions were fed by deadly clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi demonstrators.

Plan your island getaway now: In time, the mountainous tropical paradise of Oahu will erode, according to new research, with the biggest losses coming from within the island itself.

To be accurate, you do have some time to book that vacation before Hawaii's Oahu flattens from an island into a low-lying seamount. Researchers writing in the upcoming Feb. 15 issue of the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta estimate that the volcanic island will continue to grow, thanks to plate tectonics, for another 75,000 to 1.75 million years. After that, however, the forces working to eat away at Oahu from the inside out will begin to triumph.

Researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah investigated the forces that add and subtract material from Oahu. The island offers an ideal place to conduct such a study, the researchers said, as it consists of one kind of rock that is exposed to very different levels of precipitation. Various regions in Oahu can record between 2 and 23 feet of precipitation a year, depending on the local climate. [ Gallery: One-of-a-Kind Places on Earth ]

      1. The year's top ancient mysteries (and missteps)

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

      2. 2,750-year-old temple found near Jerusalem
      3. Weird Science 2012: Sex, drugs and doomsday
      4. Peru's mysterious Nazca Lines form a labyrinth

The researchers measured solids dissolved in both surface and groundwater from 45 streams and 30 springs and wells around the island, adding those new measurements to previously reported data, for a total of 170 water samples scattered across Oahu.

Using that data, scientists calculated the mass Oahu loses each year. Although one might expect rain to carry away most of the soil in such a wet climate, underground freshwater springs actually removed the bulk of the mineral material from Oahu, the researchers found.

"More material is dissolving from those islands than what is being carried off through erosion," study researcher Steve Nelson, a Brigham Young University geologist, said in a statement.

In fact, groundwater carried between three and 12 times as much dissolved solids compared to surface water, the researchers report.

Oahu is made up of the remnants of two collapsed shield volcanoes, the kind known for burping out thick, oozy lava that hardens into new land. One volcano, Waianae, was active from about 4 to 2.6 million years ago; the other, Koolau, developed later.

Today, Oahu grows not because of volcanism, but from geologic uplift. As the younger Hawaiian Islands push the Pacific tectonic plate downward, nearby Oahu "pops up," as if on a seesaw. That uplift pushes Oahu's landforms upward at a rate of 0.2 feet per thousand years, enough (for now) to compensate for the losses caused by groundwater carrying away the island's mass.

Researchers hope that the same methods they used on Oahu can help clarify how other tropical islands change in response to different climate conditions.

Zach Udko: The Top 10 Top 10 Lists of 2012

2012 was the year that was supposed to destroy us -- and it nearly did.

After surviving an unparalleled disaster that rocked us to our core (Lindsay Lohan in Liz & Dick), we pulled together as a nation of Thelmas and Louises, ready to boldly drive off the fiscal cliff together.

Now, as December draws to a close, our nation's critics and bloggers have once again generously given us their thoughts on the main cultural and newsworthy events of the year in the form of Top 10 lists. Since my earliest childhood, I have always been a sucker for these holiday treats, savoring the opportunity to measure the tastes of each scribe against my own.

These essential lists provide us with a sense of perspective, comfort and order. They fulfill a deeply spiritual need to make sense of our existences in the face of a cruel and capricious universe. As the Italian novelist Umberto Eco explains, "It's a way of escaping thoughts about death. We like lists because we don't want to die."

And so, in recognition of their enduring value, instead of offering my own Top 10 films, plays or books, I present to you my Top 10 Top 10 Lists of 2012. I hope that a close inspection of these items (varied in content, unparalleled in exuberance) helps you grapple with the incomprehensible as we begin to face new mysteries in 2013. Without further ado, these are the lists that fascinated and enlightened me this year:

(AP) ? Thousands of Iraqi demonstrators massed in a Sunni-dominated province west of Baghdad Wednesday, determined to keep up the pressure on a Shiite-led government that many accuse of trying to marginalize them.

It was the third major protest in less than a week in Anbar, Iraq's largest province, once the heart of the deadly Sunni insurgency that erupted after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

The unrest is part of a larger picture of sectarian conflicts that threaten the stability of the country, a year after the last U.S. troops left.

The demonstrations follow the arrest last week of 10 bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, who comes from Anbar and is one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials. The case is exacerbating tensions with Iraq's Sunnis, who see the detentions as politically motivated.

Protesters turned out Wednesday near the provincial capital Ramadi, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad. The city and nearby Fallujah were the scenes of some of the deadliest fighting between U.S. troops and Iraqi insurgents.

Demonstrators gathered along a highway linking Baghdad with neighboring Jordan and Syria. They held banners demanding that Sunni rights be respected and calling for the release of Sunni prisoners in Iraqi jails. "We warn the government not to draw the country into sectarian conflict," read one. Another declared: "We are not a minority."

Al-Issawi made an appearance at the rally, arriving in a long convoy of black SUVs protected by heavily armed bodyguards. He condemned last week's raid on his office and rattled off a list of grievances aimed at Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government.

"Injustice, marginalization, discrimination and double standards, as well as the politicization of the judiciary system and a lack of respect for partnership, law and constitution ... have all turned our neighborhoods in Baghdad into huge prisons surrounded by concrete blocks," he declared.

Iraq's majority Shiites rose to power following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime, though the country's minority Sunni Arabs and Kurds do hold some posts in the government.

Many Sunnis see the arrest of the finance minister's guards as the latest in a series of moves by the Shiite prime minister against their sect and other perceived political opponents. Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, one of the country's highest-ranking Sunni politicians, is now living in exile in Turkey after being handed multiple death sentences for allegedly running death squads ? a charge he dismisses as politically motivated.

"This sit-in will remain open-ended until the demonstrators' demands are met, and until the injustice against ends," cleric Hamid al-Issawi told The Associated Press at the protest. He accused al-Maliki's government of trying to create rifts between Sunnis and Shiites.

"These practices are aimed at drawing the country into a sectarian conflict again by creating crisis and targeting prominent national figures," the cleric said.

Al-Maliki has defended the arrests of the finance minister's guards as legal and based on warrants issued by judicial authorities. He also recently warned against a return to sectarian strife in criticizing the responses of prominent Sunni officials to the detentions.

In a recent statement, the prime minister dismissed the rhetoric as political posturing ahead of provincial elections scheduled for April and warned his opponents not to forget the dark days of sectarian fighting "when we used to collect bodies and chopped heads from the streets."

The political tensions are rising at a sensitive time. Iraq's ailing President Jalal Talabani is incapacitated following a serious stroke last week and is being treated in a German hospital. The 79-year-old president, an ethnic Kurd, is widely seen as a unifying figure with the clout to mediate among the country's ethnic and sectarian groups.

Also Wednesday, the United Nations mission to Iraq said its monitors have determined that a hospital that treated a member of an Iranian exile group who died this week at a refugee camp near Baghdad did not consider his health condition serious enough to warrant hospitalization when he arrived for treatment in November.

An organization representing the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq exile group on Monday accused Iraqi authorities of preventing 56-year-old Behrooz Rahimian from being hospitalized, and alleged that the U.N. failed to take sufficient steps to intervene. Iraq considers the MEK a terrorist group and wants its members out of the country.

The U.N. mission in Baghdad said in a statement Wednesday that it "does not have any indication so far that treatment was obstructed by the Iraqi authorities." It noted that representatives for the refugee residents told U.N. monitors that Rahimian "appeared to be in good condition until the time of his death."

Real estate: Lahore property prices largely stagnant over the past 5 ...

Some areas see a sharp rise, others see stagna?tion, even declin?e.

Average land prices in most middle class neighbourhoods in Lahore increased by a meagre 2.79% per year during the past five years, according to the data. DESIGN: FAIZAN DAWOOD.

    KARACHI:?

A glut of new real estate developments in Lahore over the past five years has created a housing surplus in the city, keeping prices throughout much of the provincial capital largely stagnant, according to new data released by Zameen.com.

As a precursor to creating a real estate price index, Zameen.com, one of the largest real estate websites in Pakistan, has compiled data on average real estate prices for Lahore since it began tracking data in 2007. The data is based on land and house price listings on Zameen.com. While the website is not able to keep track of actual sale prices of each property listed, the trends in listing prices are often a useful proxy for actual prices. It was this data that was shared with The Express Tribune and it does not paint a pretty picture for real estate investors in the city.

Average land prices in most middle class neighbourhoods in Lahore increased by a meagre 2.79% per year during the past five years, according to the data. During that time, inflation averaged 13.83% per year, meaning that most people who invested in land in the provincial capital lost money in real terms. Any property price increase they saw was wiped away by inflation.

House prices fared only marginally better, with the average price of a home in a middle or upper-middle income neighbourhood in Lahore increasing by a meagre 3.73% per year during the past five years, again well below inflation.0002

There was, nonetheless, some significant variation within house prices. The average 1,210-square-yard (two kanals, in local parlance) house in middle and upper-middle income neighbourhoods in Lahore saw its prices rise by only 3.42% per year during the five years between 2007 and 2012. The average price increase for a one kanal (605 square yard) house in those neighbourhoods rose by an even worse 2.35% per year, according to Zameen.com?s data.

Property prices towards the lower end of the spectrum ? 10 marlas (303 square yards) ? rose by an average of 5.3% per year during the period covered by Zameen.com?s data, which suggests that demand among the lower end of the middle class remains more robust.

These property price growth rates are not the entirety of a real estate investor?s returns on his or her investment, of course. There is also rental yield, the annual rent received from a property divided by its total price. Data on the rental yields in Lahore are not currently available, but it seems highly unlikely that yields would be high enough to beat the inflation rate over the past five years.

It is also important to recognise that the averages do not mean that any individual investor would not have been able to beat inflation, or even make good money. Indeed, the data suggests that patterns across Lahore are far from uniform.

    0003

Buyers of property in Bahria Town, Valencia Housing Society, and Wapda Town saw their property prices increase by an average of 10.76%, 8.06%, and 7.68% per year respectively. Somewhat surprisingly, Gulberg houses fared the worst: prices actually declined even in nominal terms by an average of 7.66% per year, though in that case, it may simply be that the higher-end properties in Gulberg are no longer on sale and thus no longer show up in the average for the neighbourhood.

Anecdotal evidence, however, does seem to suggest that Lahoris increasingly prefer to live in housing societies built by large real estate development companies, with all the amenities and comforts that such societies offer. Those anecdotes are backed up in the data, with the higher price increases being in the middle-priced housing societies, and the worst drops coming in the larger houses in older neighbourhoods.

Social Media For Marketing - Mehak Naheem Online Business Coach

Today I am going to share a post on the topic of social media for marketing your business. I get so many people asking me about social media because they just can?t get it to work for their business. If you?re an online marketer or business owner and trying to build a brand, remember the brand is you! So always engage with your followers and share what you do on a daily basis but then relate this back to working from home. If you?re spending hours and hours on social media and not getting results, you?re probably not doing it correctly.

You should post 2-3 times a day at different times to send your messages to different people. That?s not saying to spend 2-3 hours a day looking at other peoples profiles, thats?s not social media for marketing and that won?t get you leads! Leads are the people who are interested in what you are offering, like you and are potential customers. I would recommend using a good email marketing system to give people value over a period of time and so they can find out more about you. Also by using an email marketing system you can track your leads so you know what type of marketing is working best for you. Try out an email marketing system I use for 30 days CLICK HERE!

    social media for marketing

Your leads are what you?re trying to generate here so people are put into your marketing funnel and then they will work with you. Social media for marketing is a great free way to generate leads and have lots of consumer engagement. It?s a known fact that people like to buy not be sold to, they also like to buy from people they like. So the more you share the more they will interact.

It?s also better to have a Facebook page as oppose to a profile because a page doesn?t have a limit of how many people can like it but you can only have 5000 friends on a profile. Also a page is good for marketing purposes if you decide to use Facebook ads at a later stage.

Paid Social Media For Marketing Your Business

Paid social media for marketing can be quite costly especially if you?re new to the industry and have just bought a course or business. Also at this stage you probably don?t know much about paid marketing so it?s very easy to lose a lot of money. This is why you need a mentor to teach you the best converting strategies and increase your knowledge. Are you telling people to do what you want them to do, ie: share your posts or visit your site? If you?re not then chances are people won?t. You have to remember that any type of social media for marketing, whether it?s Facebook or Twitter, does work but if you have the knowledge and are carrying out your marketing correctly, only then you will see results.?For more tips to grow your business and work with me CLICK BELOW.

Study shows rapid warming on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet

COLUMBUS, OhioIn a discovery that raises further concerns about the future contribution of Antarctica to sea level rise, a new study finds that the western part of the ice sheet is experiencing nearly twice as much warming as previously thought.

The temperature record from Byrd Station, a scientific outpost in the center of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), demonstrates a marked increase of 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit (2.4 degrees Celsius) in average annual temperature since 1958that is, three times faster than the average temperature rise around the globe.

This temperature increase is nearly double what previous research has suggested, and revealsfor the first timewarming trends during the summer months of the Southern Hemisphere (December through February), said David Bromwich, professor of geography at Ohio State University and senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center.

The findings were published online this week in the journal Nature Geoscience.

"Our record suggests that continued summer warming in West Antarctica could upset the surface mass balance of the ice sheet, so that the region could make an even bigger contribution to sea level rise than it already does," said Bromwich.

"Even without generating significant mass loss directly, surface melting on the WAIS could contribute to sea level indirectly, by weakening the West Antarctic ice shelves that restrain the region's natural ice flow into the ocean."

Andrew Monaghan, study co-author and scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), said that these findings place West Antarctica among the fastest-warming regions on Earth.

"We've already seen enhanced surface melting contribute to the breakup of the Antarctic's Larsen B Ice Shelf, where glaciers at the edge discharged massive sections of ice into the ocean that contributed to sea level rise," Monaghan said. "The stakes would be much higher if a similar event occurred to an ice shelf restraining one of the enormous WAIS glaciers."

Researchers consider the WAIS especially sensitive to climate change, explained Ohio State University doctoral student Julien Nicolas. Since the base of the ice sheet rests below sea level, it is vulnerable to direct contact with warm ocean water. Its melting currently contributes 0.3 mm to sea level rise each yearsecond to Greenland, whose contribution to sea level rise has been estimated as high as 0.7 mm per year.

Due to its location some 700 miles from the South Pole and near the center of the WAIS, Byrd Station is an important indicator of climate change throughout the region.

In the past, researchers haven't been able to make much use of the Byrd Station measurements because the data was incomplete; nearly one third of the temperature observations were missing for the time period of the study. Since its establishment in 1957, the station hasn't always been occupied. A year-round automated station was installed in 1980, but it has experienced frequent power outages, especially during the long polar night, when its solar panels can't recharge.

Bromwich and two of his graduate students, along with colleagues from NCAR and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, corrected the past Byrd temperature measurements and used corrected data from a computer atmospheric model and a numerical analysis method to fill in the missing observations.

Aside from offering a more complete picture of warming in West Antarctica, the study suggests that if this warming trend continues, melting will become more extensive in the region in the future, Bromwich said.

While the researchers work to fully understand the cause of the summer warming at Byrd Station, the next step is clear, he added.

"West Antarctica is one of the most rapidly changing regions on Earth, but it is also one of the least known," he said. "Our study underscores the need for a reliable network of meteorological observations throughout West Antarctica, so that we can know what is happeningand whywith more certainty."
